J. A. Baughman Church History Award
presented to
THE NORTH LAKE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Monday, October 17, 2011 at Church Conference

FINISHED WITH CHURCH HISTORY? NOT YET!

Our big celebration is over but our history continues. Each week presents new opportunities for historical events. It will be interesting to see transformations when we celebrate our 200th year.

Our church received an award from the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

At our annual church conference on October 17 we received the J. A. Baughman History Award. Every year this honor is given to the ONE church in the conference that has done an outstanding job in producing and printing celebration materials. (A reminder: the Detroit Conference includes the eastern half of southern Michigan and all of the Upper Peninsula.)

What did we do to deserve this award? We made bookmarks, an anniversary pictorial directory, 2011 calendar, weekly historical fact booklet, embroidered polo shirts and bandanas, cookbook, and head scarves. We had a VBS with a circuit rider theme, a kick-off afternoon in August, skits by our youth, phone calls to people in the 1800's and (our biggie) an historical booklet.

Sandy Eisele, your many days of research and organization are greatly appreciated! I'm sure I have not listed everything that we did this year but our congregation made this  award possible.

THANKS AND WE CAN GIVE OURSELVES A PAT ON THE BACK!

Parents' Afternoon Out    November 6
   Dinner is Served

Children will stay after church on November 6, and prepare the meal for their parents. Ann Beyer will work on table manners, set up, and meal preparation.

Contact Ann  if you can assist her or if your children are not already signed up for this special afternoon.

 All Saint's Sunday
November 6
This is our opportunity to celebrate the life of our saints who have died since November 2010.

From our congregation we will remember:
     Andrew Lincoln Fraser
Andrew Christopher Brekke (Chris & Kristen's infant son)

As their names are read the bell will toll. The congregation will have an opportunity to also lift up the names of other loved ones, as well.

On this day, we will also dedicate memorial gifts and other items and work given to God’s glory. Including the dedication of the newly purchased land, and hopefully our spire, if all goes as planned.

Great is the Lord
   Great is the Lord, He is holy and just;
By His power we trust in His love.
   Great is the Lord, He is faithful and true;
by His mercy He proves He is love.

Great are you, Lord, and worthy of glory!
Great are you, Lord, and worthy of praise!
Great are you, Lord; I lift up my voice,
I lift up my voice: Great is the Lord!
   Great is the Lord!
--Michael W. and Deborah D. Smith

May we this Fall and Thanksgiving season celebrate and sing the greatness of our Lord. Let us Gather together and in all things give Thanks.

 ADVENT ANGELS  STUDY

7:15 pm Tuesdays begins November 29
9:00 am Wednesdays begins Nov. 30 (instead of the usual Wednesday morning Bible Study, which will resume after Christmas)

This advent season we will do a four week Bible study about angels. We need to order books that will cost $5.50 a person.
Therefore, I need to have you sign up for a book by Sunday, Nov. 6.   Classes will begin the week following Thanksgiving.

Even if you cannot attend a class, I encourage you to purchase the book and do the study.

You will be using your Bible and do the lessons at home in preparation for class discussion.

Please join us for a fun filled, yet thought provoking Advent.

OF CABBAGES AND KINGS                    November, 2011

WORSHIP

The first Sunday in Advent is November 27. The Church will be entering into the Christmas worship season and though it may be early I would like to share with you a few thoughts from a book titled The Dynamics of Worship by James P. Gills, M.D.

That's right, he isn't of the Cloth.  He does, however, have some very good thoughts on corporate worship. I'm limited to about 400 words so I'll edit as necessary.  "We all value those times when the family gathers for special occasions. Festivities shared with others we love lend a certain significance to life's major happenings and serve to remind us that we belong to someone--that we are part of a family.  The same holds true for the corporate celebration of God.  We must understand that getting anything out of worship depends directly on our willingness to put effort in to it!  This may mean allowing God to make major changes in personal attitude, habits, and use of time.  That, in itself challenges us enough, but when we come together in Christian fellowship with other believers we face added difficulties. However great the challenge, it's well worth the effort."

"Many go to church. Few go to worship" announced a church billboard in Nashville. The Christian community practices its beliefs in many ways, but does a desire to worship form the basis for all our activity? In the meetings there may be preaching, confession of sins and assurances of forgiveness, Scripture reading, communion and baptism. The church sanctions marriages, participates in public prayer and sings hymns.   But what motive lies at the core of all these experiences?

Worship SHOULD be:
Adoration of God should be at the center of every aspect of our lives. Worship is the motivational factor, it spurs us on to  acquire increased Knowledge (of the Bible) and to develop a stronger Covenant with the Lord. We do live under a new covenant with the Father.  No longer do we live bound to a  regimen of Jewish law, but we enjoy grace by faith in Jesus the Christ. Love and dependence on Him gives us the "ability" to   keep His commands and to worship Him fully.

In closing I would like to leave this thought: "The Old Testament legal ceremonies were fulfilled in Christ, so we do not repeat them today. But I see no reason why we must make an artificial distinction between "Old Testament worship" and "New Testament worship" when we see no distinction in Scripture."

May the Grace of Jesus the Christ be with you.

  Shalom:
Gordon Knight Co-Lay Leader:

 MITTEN TREE  in Fellowship Hall
Once again we are gathering items that will bring joy to families who are struggling in today's economy.

We call it a Mitten Tree, but you are free to bring food, toys, clothing or any gift that can make Christmas bright. Do not wrap them.
Mittens, hats, and scarves will decorate the tree in the Fellowship Hall. Other items can be placed below it.

All items must be at the church by Dec. 18 for delivery to Stockbridge Community Outreach.

Childcare Coordinator
We are looking for a replacement for our paid childcare coordinator position.  The position is shared with another person and would involve half of the Sundays, assisting with COOLJ 1 from 9:30 - 10:30 and coordinating the programming with the education committee for COOLJ 2 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM.  The position is open as of November 1, 2011.  If you are interested or know of someone interested, please contact a member of the Pastor-Parish committee.

United Methodist Women

The UMW will be meeting on November 11 at 5:30 PM.  Ann is doing a sewing night that night as well. Sandy is bringing soup. Everyone could bring some finger food.

   Thank You

Dear North Lake United Methodist Women,                                Oct. 19, 2011
It was such a pleasant surprise to receive your generous check in support of Faith in Action, and even nicer to receive your kind words of support for the work we do here. I know you know, but I'll repeat: that this is work we accomplish together, and we're most appreciative of your being with us in spirit as we go about the day to day work we do here.
It's very encouraging that we have such broad help from our congregational partners and encourage you to refer anyone who might need our help.

   Sincerely,
Nancy Paul,
  Faith in Action

Custodian - Job Opening

Dave and Marilyn Jachalke are going on an extended vacation this winter.  That leaves the church without a custodian. Pastor Parish committee will be looking for a church custodian starting the week of December 17. The job requires approximately 12 hours per month at $12.50 per hour. The duties include cleaning the church buildings, sweeping or shoveling the church walks as needed for events, and doing lawn trimming in the summer (mowing is done by a volunteer). If interested, please contact Sandy Eisele at skeisele@yahoo.com.

Youth Christmas Cantata
December 18th, 10:30 service

Thanks to a generous grant from the Endowment Committee and the cooperative efforts of the Worship Team and Education department we are excited to present to our congregation, friends, and families a musical titled "Three Wise Men and a Baby" during our worship service on the 18th of December. This program is about the three Wise Men searching for the baby Jesus and offering far more than their gifts of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh.

Please join our youth in celebrating the reason for the season in this joyous program.  I am very excited to be working with our young Christians as we explore new territory with scripts and music. Practice CDs have been handed out and rehearsals will be starting in November. Please keep this program in your hearts and prayers as we set out on our own journey to the Christ Child.
Peace and Joy to all,  Dianne Smith

Work Day – Oct. 22

The more people we have help, the less time it takes to get things done. We need You, and You, and You. And we will feed you too!

Thanks to the many people who have worked cleaning our grounds of the fallen leaves. We thank the Trustees for their many hours of service behind the scenes.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT – Thank You All for Attending!

Sunday, Oct. 23 was a beautiful afternoon, and we had a great crowd of people here to enjoy Family Fun. We counted at least seventy people, of all ages. (Up from 50 last year.)  There were pumpkins to decorate and carve, donated by Wing Farms. There were scarecrows to make from jeans and plaid shirts and hats Jo Page found at our rummage sale.   The Reillys donated straw and a tractor and hay wagon for our hay ride. John Tandy stoked the fire and then took us on a hayride that included a cemetery walk this year. When we returned the hot dogs were ready, food was plentiful, and everyone had a smile.  Everyone contributed in  some way, helping as they saw the need.

Attention Coupon Clippers

Helping Others and Enjoying Your Soup, Too!

We are currently collecting:

  • Our Family brand items -bar code (this is the Polly's/Country Market brand)
  • Box Tops for Education from General Mills products
  • Campbell's Labels for Education: The UPC section, along with the Labels for Education symbol (little scholar with pencil.) This applies to all Campbell's items.

There will now be a box with three receptacles that we will have in Fellowship Hall.  Please bring any of these barcodes or box tops and we will make sure they get to the right place.  Here is a way to help mission and our schools just by doing a little clipping.

Also on the table next to the prayer shawls is a box of coupons.  If you like to save money using coupons, look in the box.  You may find a coupon that you can use.  A friend of our church clips the coupons for us and makes them available for us to use.  Maybe the money you save could go to the building fund or mission!

Pop can tabs are also being collected, there is a large jar for those on the mission table in the hall.

We are also collecting POP CANS in the barrel out the back door of fellowship hall. The money we get helps to support our youth ministry.
