Futuring Seminar

Seven church members gathered in the Fellowship Hall on a Sunday afternoon in February to learn about the Futuring process.  Rev. King and Anne Hanna led us through the beginning processes of vision and hope for North Lake UMC.  "How family-friendly is your church?" was the focus of this first meeting.

Rev. Hanna reminded us of these truths:  The next meeting with the Hannas is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 21st.  Everyone is encouraged to attend so that we can begin to plan out a vision and the future direction of our church.  Please mark your  calendar to attend this important event.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
  March 14, 2010

Anahit (not her real name), 24, lived in a small town in Armenia. In need of a job, she traveled to Dubai. Lured by empty promises of work, Anahit found herself trapped in a world of prostitution and human trafficking. When police conducted a raid, Anahit and other trafficked survivors were deported to their home countries.

Thankfully for Anahit and others like her, there is hope for a better life through refuge and shelter services provided by UMCOR Armenia’s Anti Human Trafficking Project. The project helps trafficked survivors reintegrate into society and recover from their traumatic experience.

When you give to One Great Hour of Sharing, your gift will help cover UMCOR's cost of doing business and allows us to keep our promise that 100 percent of every other contribution you make to a specific UMCOR project, like the one in Armenia, will be spent on that project and not on administrative costs.

March  2010

Forty Days:

Lent is a Christian season of forty days, not counting Sundays.  One rather large Christian denomination will be sponsoring a "fish fry" every Friday during the Lenten season.  I suppose for some reason or another this "fish fry" on Friday will instill in the attendees the reason why the early Christian Church established the tradition of the season of Lent. The sponsors expect to serve 700 people at $8.00 a plate; this is no small piece of change.  Is this activity really what the early church had in mind?  I don't think so.

Drawing from the "The United Methodist Book of Worship", Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the Saturday before Easter Sunday.  The word Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "lencten" which means "spring". The following description is important when compared to a "fish fry".  The Lenten season is a  preparation for celebrating EASTER.  Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts.  Lent then became a time for penance by all Christians.  The First Sunday of Lent describes Jesus' temptation by Satan;  the Sixth Sunday (Passion/Palm Sunday), Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem and Jesus' subsequent passion and death.  Because Sundays are always little Easters, the penitential spirit of Lent should be tempered with JOYFUL EXPECTATION OF THE RESURRECTION.

Lent is not a "fish fry" on Friday.  As Pastor Alice pointed out during the Ash Wednesday service; "Lent is a season of reflection and repentance.  It invites us to look inside our hearts, seeing ourselves with compassion and truth----to see our brokenness and our beauty, our failings and our faithfulness".  "Traditionally the season of Lent has been a time of fasting, allowing the fast to enter into our lives as a call to prayer."  Fasting is a means of focusing on our commitment to Jesus the Christ. Fasting can be in the form of doing without particular luxuries, material consumerism or various forms of entertainment.  As we fast and pray our thoughts are focused on Jesus the Christ's passion, His death and His resurrection.

Note: the season of Lent is not a "fish fry"

Shalom:
Gordon G. Knight
(co-lay leader)

UMCOR Haiti   February 19, 2010
A weekly report of UMCOR's relief efforts in Haiti.  (Click here for the most recent report.)

Thanks so much for the outpouring of support for UMCOR's Haiti relief efforts - the generosity is amazing! As we work with the people in Haiti to address the long term recovery and development needs, we are thankful to move forward with the confidence that the people of the United Methodist Church will continue to partner with UMCOR in the years to come. Especially as Haiti prepares for the rainy season, and the hurricane season, please be in prayer with the people of Haiti and know that your support is critical.

As of February 18, 2010 The UMCOR work plan anticipates three phases of recovery: emergency, recovery and rehabilitation. Currently operating in the emergency phase -- from the time of the earthquake through April and including the start of the rainy season in March – UMCOR is addressing the most immediate needs of access to food, clean water and sanitation, temporary shelter and emotional and spiritual support.

This week's highlights include:
To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can still donate by placing a contribution in the offering plate.

And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.

Music and Worship

Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. – Bell Choir Rehearsal
Sunday, 9:30 a.m. – Choir rehearsal

Use your musical talents for the Lord.  Dianne Smith and Dawn Brennan are working diligently to enhance our worship with great music.  We know that there are others in our church with hidden musical talent. Please step forward and offer your gift of music.  Does anyone play guitar?  Sometimes, a guitar would just be sooo  great.

Sewing Bee in Fellowship HallSewing For Mission

Warm Your Heart by Making Others Warm

The Membership Care and Outreach Committee had two sewing bees to make warm mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves for Stockbridge Outreach. Five complete sets of hat, scarf, and mittens are finished, along with 4 sets of hat and scarf or mittens. There are many more sets still in progress. Thanks to all the women who helped sew, cut out patterns, make fringe, etc, and to the men's breakfast gang who helped set up. Special thanks to Mallory and Mason Meads, it is nice to have young missionaries too.
