Our History
Early Years and Growth
The church’s first leader, Charles Glenn, served as class leader for 40 years until his death in 1876. One of Glenn’s great-grandsons, Harvey Pearce, was a prominent minister in the Detroit Conference and occasionally served at North Lake. In 1866, the congregation built a new church building after the Civil War, completing it by the end of that year. The 1866 building has undergone many restorations but still stands today as a symbol of faith and community.
History of North Lake UMC
North Lake United Methodist Church in Chelsea, Michigan, has a rich history dating back to 1836, when a Methodist class of 12 members was organized at North Lake. This makes it one of the oldest Methodist congregations in the area, predating Michigan’s statehood by nearly two decades.
Enduring Mission
Over more than 190 years, North Lake UMC has weathered major historical events — the Civil and World Wars, the turbulent 1960s, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the present day — while maintaining a mission to serve a growing community.
Modern Church Profile
Today, North Lake UMC continues to stand strong offering worship, Bible studies, small groups, and outreach programs, fostering a family-centered, faith-based community.
